Interlock Devices, Maryland Alcohol Rehab Centers Can Improve State’s Alcohol Addiction Problems

Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy says expanding the use of interlock devices can help reduce drunk driving cases and other alcohol-related crimes throughout Maryland. McCarthy’s announcement comes on the heels of the passing of Noah’s Law, which requires those convicted of alcohol-related driving crimes to participate in the state’s Ignition Interlock System Program. The increased use of interlock devices, along with addiction treatments available at Maryland alcohol rehab centers, can help improve public safety throughout the state and successfully address alcohol addiction.

Using Interlock Devices to Address Alcohol Abuse

Interlock Devices

Interlock devices could help reduce drunk driving accidents in Maryland.

McCarthy says that most individuals with drunk driving offenses often struggle with alcohol addiction, and that interlock devices could help prevent alcohol-related tragedies such as car accidents. Additionally, McCarthy says the interlock devices can help in cases where alcohol abuse leads to domestic violence, and prevent those under the influence from harming family and loved ones upon arriving home. McCarthy argues that interlock devices need to be used more creatively beyond drunk driving offenses to effectively prevent alcohol-related crimes.

At present, Maryland does not require that interlock devices be installed for first-time offenders in non-aggravated drunk driving cases, but the attorney says the devices should be installed in vehicles of all offenders, regardless of the crime’s severity. The attorney also shared research that showed interlock devices are proven highly effective at preventing drunk drivers from becoming repeat offenders.

Addressing Alcohol Abuse at Rehab Centers

Alcohol rehab centers in Maryland offer diverse treatments for alcohol addiction that can be tailored to each individual for the best possible sobriety outcome. Most alcohol rehab centers also treat patients for co-occurring disorders that stem from addiction, such as domestic violence and anger management. The treatments offered at alcohol rehab centers not only help patients overcome alcohol dependence, but treat the underlying causes that lead to addiction in the first place.

The first stage of treatment at alcohol rehab centers is detoxification, which helps addicts overcome physical dependence on alcohol. Following detox, patients receive counseling and therapy, as well as ongoing education on alcohol abuse and addiction. Addiction education courses teach addicts how to navigate successfully through society using healthy stress management techniques and coping skills.

Following rehab treatment, recovering alcohol addicts participate in ongoing support groups and/or 12-step programs that lower the risk for relapse and encourage lasting sobriety. In some instances, medications can be offered as part of alcohol rehab treatment to prevent recovering addicts from experiencing strong alcohol cravings.
